How to Cook Onion Rings in Instant Pot Air Fryer

As of my last update in September 2021, there is no official “Instant Pot Air Fryer” that exists. Instant Pot is a brand known for its multi-cookers, which typically include pressure cooking, slow cooking, sautéing, and other functions. However, they do offer an Instant Pot Duo Crisp model that comes with an air frying lid, which allows you to cook dishes with both pressure cooking and air frying functionalities.

If you have the Instant Pot Duo Crisp or a similar model with an air frying feature, here’s how you can cook onion rings:

You’ll need the following ingredients to cook Onion Rings in an Instant Pot Air Fryer and get an authentic flavor:

  1. Large onions (sweet onions or yellow onions work well)
  2. All-purpose flour
  3. Bread crumbs or panko
  4. Egg wash (whisked eggs with a splash of milk or water)
  5. Cooking oil spray
  6. Salt and pepper (to taste)
  7. Optional seasonings: paprika, garlic powder, etc.

By following the simple and detailed methods provided below, you may make delicious onion rings in an instant pot air fryer:

Step 1: Prepare the Onions:

Peel the onions and slice them into rings, about 1/2 inch thick. Separate the rings and set them aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Coating:

In separate shallow dishes, place the all-purpose flour, egg wash, and bread crumbs or panko. Season the flour and bread crumbs with salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings you prefer.

Step 3: Coat the Onion Rings:

Dip each onion ring into the flour, shaking off any excess. Next, dip it into the egg wash, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat the onion ring with the seasoned bread crumbs or panko, pressing lightly to adhere the crumbs to the onion.

Step 4: Spray with Cooking Oil:

Lightly spray the coated onion rings with cooking oil on both sides. This step will help them become crispy during air frying.

Step 5: Preheat the Instant Pot with Air Frying Lid:

Place the air frying lid on your Instant Pot Duo Crisp. Turn on the Instant Pot and select the “Air Fry” function. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.

Step 6: Air Fry the Onion Rings:

Place the coated onion rings in the Instant Pot air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they are not overcrowded. If necessary, cook the onion rings in batches.

Step 7: Air Fry:

Slide the loaded basket into the Instant Pot and put on the air frying lid. Set the timer for approximately 6-8 minutes, flipping the onion rings halfway through the cooking time to ensure even browning.

Step 8: Check for Doneness:

After the timer is up, check the onion rings. They should be golden brown and crispy.

Step 9: Serve:

Once the onion rings are cooked and crispy, remove them from the Instant Pot and serve immediately. Enjoy your homemade onion rings!

  1. Cooking times may vary depending on the thickness of the onion rings and the specific model of your Instant Pot Duo Crisp or similar multi-cooker. Adjust the time as needed to achieve your desired level of crispiness.
  2. Feel free to customize the seasoning to your taste. You can add spices like paprika, garlic powder, or cayenne pepper to the flour or bread crumbs for extra flavor.
  3. Serve the onion rings with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ketchup, barbecue sauce, or aioli.
  4. If you don’t have an Instant Pot with an air frying feature, you can use a standalone air fryer or opt for traditional deep-frying methods to cook onion rings.
