How to Cook Fried Chicken in Instant Pot Air Fryer

As of my last update in September 2021, there is no official “Instant Pot Air Fryer” that exists. Instant Pot is a brand known for its multi-cookers, which typically include pressure cooking, slow cooking, sautéing, and other functions. However, they do offer an Instant Pot Duo Crisp model that comes with an air frying lid, which allows you to cook dishes with both pressure cooking and air frying functionalities.

If you have the Instant Pot Duo Crisp or a similar model with an air frying feature, here’s how you can cook fried chicken:

Cook Fried Chicken in a Instant Pot Air Fryer with the following ingredients for an authentic flavour:

  1. Chicken pieces (thighs, drumsticks, wings, etc.)
  2. Buttermilk (or regular milk)
  3. All-purpose flour
  4. Bread crumbs or panko (optional, for extra crispiness)
  5. Cooking oil spray
  6. Salt and pepper (to taste)
  7. Paprika, garlic powder, or other seasonings (optional, for added flavor)

You can make wonderful Fried Chicken with a Instant Pot Air Fryer following the easy and clear instructions listed below:

Step 1: Marinate the Chicken (optional):

If you have time, you can marinate the chicken pieces in buttermilk for a few hours or overnight. This step is optional, but it helps tenderize the chicken and adds flavor.

Step 2: Prepare the Coating:

In a shallow dish, mix the all-purpose flour with salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings you prefer. You can also add a little paprika or garlic powder for extra flavor. If you want an extra crispy coating, you can mix in some bread crumbs or panko as well.

Step 3: Coat the Chicken:

Remove the chicken pieces from the buttermilk (if marinated) and pat them dry with paper towels. Dredge each piece in the flour mixture, making sure to coat them thoroughly on all sides.

Step 4: Spray with Cooking Oil:

Lightly spray the coated chicken pieces with cooking oil on both sides. This step helps to achieve a crispy texture similar to deep-fried chicken.

Step 5: Preheat the Instant Pot with Air Frying Lid:

Place the air frying lid on your Instant Pot Duo Crisp. Turn on the Instant Pot and select the “Air Fry” function. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.

Step 6: Air Fry the Chicken:

Place the coated chicken pieces in the Instant Pot air fryer basket in a single layer. Do not overcrowd the basket, as this will prevent proper air circulation.

Step 7: Air Fry:

Slide the loaded basket into the Instant Pot and put on the air frying lid. Set the timer for approximately 20-25 minutes, flipping the chicken halfway through the cooking time to ensure even browning.

Step 8: Check for Doneness:

After the timer is up, check the internal temperature of the chicken using a meat thermometer. It should reach a minimum of 165°F (74°C) to ensure it’s fully cooked. Additionally, the chicken should be golden brown and crispy on the outside.

Step 9: Serve:

Once the chicken is cooked and crispy, remove it from the Instant Pot and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your healthier version of fried chicken!

  1. Cooking times may vary depending on the size and thickness of the chicken pieces and the specific model of your Instant Pot Duo Crisp or similar multi-cooker. Adjust the time as needed to achieve the desired level of crispiness.
  2. Serve the fried chicken with your favorite dipping sauces, such as barbecue sauce, honey mustard, or ranch dressing.
  3. If you don’t have an Instant Pot with an air frying feature, you can use a standalone air fryer or opt for traditional deep-frying methods to cook fried chicken.
